I’ve spent my Easter weekend in London with Faye. She has a exhibition at the Proud Central Gallery (Open for the next two weeks!). I traveled from Aberystwyth to Faye’s home in Carmarthen on Friday, then from Carmarthen to Cardiff by car on Saturday, then Cardiff to London on the MegaBus. Saturday was the opening, and it went very well indeed!

I spent Sunday in London too, walking around shops and generally seeing the London sites. I still marvel at the London Underground, I think it is an awesome service, I love it!
I’m also marvelling at the state of modern technology. I love that I can hook my phone up to my laptop for internet use, which is what I’m doing at the moment, whinging my way down some train tracks out of London Paddington while writing this blog post. I think its brilliant!

Anyhoo, off home to Melksham now. Will be seeing family and friends for the next week or so, as well as trying to tidy my dissertation code.

Dropbox offers both free and paid for storage online, the free storage has a limit of 2GB, whereas paid sotrage has a limits of 50GB and 100GB depending on how much you want to pay.

If you use the free option, you’ll start off with so much storage, and if you invite friends to join the sservice, Dropbox will add more storage to your account!

If you want to help me out, click here

Dropbox also integrates really nicely with Mac OS X, Linux and Windows, it feels just like another folder on your computer. Drag and drop stuff into the folder (or cp/mv on the command line ) and Dropbox will sync it to it’s online servers. If you go to another computer that you’ve installed Dropbox onto, it’ll download any new content! They also have a nice web interface incase you don’t have permission to install the software on your computer. Lastly, Dropbox allows you to share files with other Dropbox users, which is really quite handy!

Anyway, I’ve been using Google Reader for the past year or so with some satisfaction, but then my browser crashed and for some reason, all of my feeds are telling me I’ve read everything…

Anyhoo, I’ve found an answer, and I think it’s rather good. It’s called Gruml. It basically replicates Google Reader functionality using a local app. It’s in beta at the moment and it does feel quite “beta-ish”, but I’m hoping for a Mail type solution where I can view my old feeds and entries offline if I want to.

Gruml has some nice features that should be really good when it matures:

Tweeting articles

Post articles to Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Bebo and more

With the help of another blogging app (like MarsEdit) post articles to your blog

Post notes

Organise articles into folders

Overall, I’m quite impressed, it’s won a place on my Dock and will open when I log in, it *should* place itself next to Mail too.

Yes, it would appear I’m becoming a little more Web 2.0 compliant…I now use RSS and Google Reader. For years I couldn’t understand why you would want RSS, I had bookmarks and could click on them and look at the site myself, but there’s something about having everything in one place which is very nice.

I tested it all out by subscribing to The Register and several BBC News sites (Science and Nature, Technology and Also in the News), after a week or so I was happily checking up every few hours, to see what had changed. It’s not perfect, articles from the BBC appear multiple times if they are published into multiple categories, and often not at the same time, so I have read the same article several times. But even that is a small price for the convenience of being able to skip the tosh and easily skip through everything. Thanks to James for pointing out (a long time ago) that Google Reader uses Vi key bindings to scroll up and down, somehow it does seem a lot easier.

Why does one start to write a blog? I know why I started mine, I wanted some representation on the web which was a bit more organised than the sites I tend to cobble together…Did I share much with you all? Looking back, no. OK, so I’ve blogged about at least one thing every month…But that’s just it, some months I’ve completely neglected this site…

I’ve been unable to sleep tonight, so thought I’d have a look around at friend’s blogs. It’s amazing to see how many aren’t updated on a regular basis, that have been left since the end of last year, or longer…There are a couple who surprise me too, a few people I would expect to update their blogs more often than I, they generally seem very interesting people, and I’m surprised that they don’t update more often.

So why is it? I know I often forget to update everyday after work, and tend to look back at the week in my weekly blogs. I think, though, when I leave Sun, I’ll probably drop back to a couple of entries a month (which will be a shame). I think people get busy, I’ll often think that the I’m doing right now is interesting, and it would be good to blog about it, but obviously I’m busy doing it, too busy to stray off to this place…

I’ve been looking for a Folding@Home client for OpenSolaris, the number of blogs (and forum posts) I came across from 2006 is unbelievable…And often the whole blog has been abandoned…I know I abandoned my old blogger blog, WordPress has a much better feature list in my opinion.

I hope that I’ll be able to make some time to update this place next year, in amongst the rush of uni work, a home life, and other bits and bobs I’m hoping will come together, and I hope you lot keep reading, I enjoy looking at my stats on a weekly (sometimes daily) basis and seeing that you lot have pushed for another all time high…
